HPMRS RAILDATE 18 Mar 05

News

RAILDATE: the weekly newsletter of the Hursley Park Model Railway Society: http://www.ibmhursleyclub.org.uk/ss/hpmrs/

RAILDATE TAKES A BREAK FOR A MONTH

This will be the last RAILDATE until Friday 22nd April as your Editor is going to be down-under for a few weeks. The "Events" section has therefore been extended in this bumper edition.

FAREHAM AND DISTRICT MODEL RAILWAY CLUB - AN APPEAL

Fareham and District Model Railway Club is holding its next exhibition on July 30th and 31st, at which the members are trying to run as many of the club layouts as possible. Ian Griffiths tells me that their problem will be a shortage of operators. So... would anyone interested in playing trains (OO or N gauge) for one or both of these days please contact Ian at ian_griffiths@uk.ibm.com. You'll get a free lunch and as much tea and coffee as you can drink!

ONDRIVES CATALOGUE

Nick Wheat has sent me the latest Ondrives catalogue (hardcopy and CD). Ondives sell a huge range of gearboxes, gears, shafts, bearings, etc, many of which have modelling applications. Let me know if you want to look at the catalogue, or go to: http://www.ondrives.com

NETWATCH

Thanks to Nick Wheat for finding this..

A fantastic site about the Woodhead route, and as Nick says, you could watch the movements at the bottom of the page all day (refresh the page to change the location and era):

http://www.thewoodheadsite.org.uk

And to Nick, Richard Buckby and Neil Kearns who all alerted me to this:

How not to move an engine (keep scrolling down to last two pictures):

http://www.uphs.org/4023move.html

The full story (provided by a friend of Richard's) is that this Union Pacific Big Boy, 4023, had been kept in operating condition inside the Cheyenne roundhouse until UP decided to free up the "stall". It was put outdoors for display alongside the world's largest Diesel, UP 6900. Both were moved for some reason, the Diesel going away by rail. However, the Big Boy had to be moved by truck, due to UP's policy of not allowing any non-UP owned steam on their tracks - even though 4023 was designed, once operated, and kept by them.

John Sherratt has just launched a "modest" website devoted to Black 5s:

http://black5photos.co.uk

Andy Sollis has updated the Churnet Valley Railway website:

http://www.kachuzyn.fsnet.co.uk/cvr-extra.htm

An auction of the late David Jenkinson's locomotives and rolling stock will take place at Christie's, South Kensington on Sunday 3rd April. Viewing will be from 1st to 3rd April, and you can view the catalogue or leave bids online at http://www.christies.com - further details from tnewth@christies.com

The North Tyneside Steam Railway Association:

http://www.ntsra.org.uk/

Interesting railway information is available from this website:

http://www.sungreen.co.uk/Lydney/_LydneyPage1.htm

On the Lydney page, there are photos of the Severn Bridge, about which, there is more information here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/gloucestershire/focus/2004/10/sharpness_rail_disaster.shtml

The Suburban Electric Railway Association:

http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~gsgleaves/welcome.htm

And finally... from Ralph Rawlinson...

On a delayed train at Epping (when the driver had a chat with a colleague unaware that he'd left the tannoy on): "******** to the lot of them, I don't care if they don't make it to work."
