BOOK NEWS

The Historical Model Railway Society is reprinting its highly successful book on Mark 1 Coaches (you should see the prices they fetch on eBay!) and is also taking the opportunity to publish a supplement containing new information and photographs that have come to light since the original was published. The two books will be available from 25th March, priced at £24.95 for the book and £9.95 for the supplement. If you buy the two together, you can get them for £30.00 for the pair. Please add £2.00 P&P to any order (one or both). (In addition, HMRS members will get their usual members' discount.)

Orders from:

NETWATCH

Class 7F, 53809, currently based at Butterley, returned to to Bath Green Park on 5th/6th March to commemorate 40 years since the closure of the Somerset and Dorset. Unfortunately, there were problems with the tractor and trailer at Butterley, which meant that the arrival of the loco was delayed until the early hours of Sunday morning. Nevertheless the event created a large amount of interest.

The Bentley in some of the shots is the one that belonged to Ivo Peters, and has now been purchased by an S&D enthusiast.

Ralph Rawlinson continues his review of high speed in Europe

Part 3 Germany

After reunification in 1990, investment priorities changed overnight, with improved and renewed links between the former West and East Germany becoming the main focus for transport spending. Only one east-west, high-speed link is currently operational, but the Berlin-Hannover "Neubaustrecke", opened in 1999. The other major reunification project, linking Erfurt with Nuremberg on the Berlin-Munich axis, has been something of an "on-off affair", as its economic case is not as robust.

Other high-speed projects are concentrated in the former West. Hannover-Wurzburg and Mannheim-Stuttgart opened around 15 years ago; services between the Main and the Ruhr conurbations were revolutionised by the 155km Frankfurt-Cologne NBS in December 2002, and the £2.2bn Nuremberg-lngolstadt NBS (55 miles) is due to open shortly. ICE3 EMUs are authorised to run at up to 205 mph on the Frankfurt-Cologne route. Also in progress is the upgrading of the Karlsruhe-Basel route, a combination of new HSL and existing lines rebuilt for 155 mph. This "Ausbaustrecke" (ABS) method of widening and upgrading existing lines has also been used successfully elsewhere, including between Cologne and Aachen. Lines are worked by the InterCityExpress (ICE) family of trains.
