RAILDATE: the weekly newsletter of the Hursley Park Model Railway Society: http://www.ibmhursleyclub.org.uk/ss/hpmrs/
*** RAILDATE will be taking a Summer break. *** The next issue will be published on Friday 5th September.
A very absorbing series started on BBC1 last Sunday: "Britain from Above". Needless to say, there is a Web tie-in, and here's a good starting point: http://www.bbc.co.uk/britainfromabove/stories/roughcuts/claphamjunction.shtml (Spotter: Nick Wheat)
London Transport Museum site: http://www.ltmuseum.co.uk/ (Spotter: Neil Kearns)

Wonderful archive TV with a flying theme here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/aerialjourneys/5347.shtml?all=1&id=5347

Someone has started a flickr group called "Britain's Engine Sheds Today": http://www.flickr.com/groups/est/
An article together with photos and a movie clip of the aerial ropeway that connected Tilmanstone Colliery with Dover Harbour: http://www.sheppeywebsite.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=295.0
There is also a fair amount of information on the ropeway on the website, and a Google on "Claughton Manor Brickworks" also turns up references to a ropeway (possibly still be in use) in Lancashire.
World news from Ralph Rawlinson
Resiting of Crewe station defended: http://www.railnews.co.uk/news/general/2008/08/05-crewe-cream-re-siting.html
The Old station "Allerston": Logically it should have been named Allerston but you will look in vain for a station by that name. This village on the Scarborough - Pickering line certainly had a station but it was never named as such. When opened in 1880 it adopted the name of Wilton a village one mile to the west but then in 1903 it became Ebberston 1½ miles to the east! Managers were always seeking how to maximise revenue never how to help passengers (who later became customers). http://www.theoldstationallerston.co.uk/
Airline to run trains: Air France/KLM has made the astonishing admission that it is in talks that could lead to it becoming a train operator and procuring its own high- speed stock. High-speed rail services and the high cost of fuel have had a dramatic effect on short-haul air services. Competition from TGV and Thalys and the new TGV Est has led to Paris-Strasbourg flights being slashed, and flights between Paris and Brussels virtually disappearing. The company has apparently spent the last four years looking at a move into rail, as new EU rules from 2010 permit greater competition in the international rail market, so the business case is strong.
Meanwhile Spain's two largest airlines, Iberia and Spanair, are also blaming the opening of new high speed lines from Madrid to Barcelona and Malaga for a big fall in domestic loadings and have already reduced the number of flights. The Spanish Government plans to have 6,200 miles of high-speed track in place by 2020 meaning that 90% of the population will live less than 30 miles from a bullet train station!
Eurostar: From 14th December 2008, Eurostar is adding an additional daily service in each direction to Brussels. Departing St Pancras at 11.04 and Brussels 12.59 it also means that Ashford regains its direct service to and from Brussels.
