On the evening of Wednesday 11th February, at 1811 Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue reported that they were attending Gainsborough Lea Road SB, after it was reported to be on fire. The signalbox was not staffed at the time, having switched out at 1520. The route between Gainsborough Trent Junction and West Holmes Junction, Lincoln, was blocked at 1822. The BT Police were advised. The signalbox was about 130 years old, and of timber construction. By 2047, Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue were damping down and the electricity supply had been disconnected. All points were secured in the normal position by 2050. SOCO staff attended, but at 2200 they reported that the officers were unable to enter the signal box due to the extent of damage to the structure and suspended investigations until daylight. The signalbox remained switched out with signals in the 'Off' position, the block section between Stow Park SB and Gainsborough Trent Junction SB remained failed pending repairs to the communications system. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lincolnshire/7885128.stm

The section through the tunnel officially closed on 6th April 1959, although regular freight traffic had ended in December 1958.
