Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup...

Preston trams
The City Council is considering building a park and ride tram system that
would use part of the disused Longridge branch.  A short demonstration
line at Ribbleton, provided by Tram Power Ltd, is (optimistically)
planned to be running by Easter 2010.

South Wales
It looks as though the promised extension of the Ebbw Vale line will at
last be built.  The Welsh Assembly has commissioned Network Rail to
develop a plan for a new station in Ebbw Vale town centre, about one mile
north of the current terminus at Ebbw Vale Parkway.

Welsh Highland Railway
Concern over Britannia bridge level crossing safety in Porthmadog.

The Weardale Railway
Residents of Wolsingham object to UK Coal's plan to use the Weardale
Railway to convey coal from the nearby opencast site at Sunniside.,2142.html

Tyne & Wear and Northumberland
A feasibility study has started into reintroducing a passenger service
over the currently freight only line from Newcastle (Benton Jn) to Blyth
and Ashington.

The Tanzanian government is dissatisfied with the way Rail India Technical
and Economic Services (RITES) have been running the country's railways and
has decided to revoke a 2007 agreement.
